Kevin O’Buckley to Lead Foundry Services at Intel
O’Buckley will oversee Intel’s systems foundry growth strategy.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 13, 2024 – Intel Corporation today announced the appointment of Kevin O’Buckley as senior vice president and general manager of Foundry Services, the customer service and ecosystem operations division of Intel Foundry. O’Buckley starts today and becomes a member of Intel’s executive leadership team reporting to CEO Pat Gelsinger. He succeeds Stuart Pann, who will retire from Intel after 35 years of service at the end of May and remain an adviser to support a seamless transition.

“Kevin brings a unique blend of expertise from across the semiconductor industry, having served as a senior leader and technologist in both foundry and fabless companies,” Gelsinger said. “As we continue building the world’s first systems foundry for the AI era, Kevin will play a critical role in helping customers achieve their goals by leveraging Intel Foundry’s unique ability to deliver process and packaging technology through a resilient and sustainable supply chain.”

What’s New: At ISC High Performance 2024, Intel announced in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) that the Aurora supercomputer has broken the exascale barrier at 1.012 exaflops and is the fastest AI system in the world dedicated to AI for open science, achieving 10.6 AI exaflops. Intel will also detail the crucial role of open ecosystems in driving AI-accelerated high performance computing (HPC).

So clearly, the funding from Apollo will be welcome news here from investors.

These are just some eye watering numbers and this is just not, this is not in isolation.

There are lots of these deals going on just quick, a quick history here because the race is on for foundries, four building chips, building chips domestically here in the US in Europe as opposed to China.

So Intel announced in December, it was investing $25 billion in Israel.

And this is after getting 3.2 billion in incentives from the Israeli government in June, Germany investing about 30 billion.

That's $32 billion in semiconductor operations.

And then this Apollo deal now is tracking previous con uh transaction with Brookfield infrastructure partners.

That was a $15 billion deal.

So you add all these up, we're talking about hundreds of billions of dollars.

Uh not only for intel but other foundries around the world.

And that's because a lot of these chip companies don't make their own chips.

NVIDIA doesn't make their own chips.

And so this is about who's going to actually manufacture uh those semiconductors.

    potentially !!

Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) has hit more than a few roadblocks in recent years, with its stock down 25% since 2019. The company was once the biggest name in chips, with more than 80% of the central processing unit (CPU) market in 2016 and a lucrative role as the exclusive supplier of chips for Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) Mac lineup.

However, increased competition has seen Intel's CPU share fall to 64%. Meanwhile, the boom in AI has shifted market demand from CPUs to graphics processing units (GPUs), making Intel rethink its business model. Additionally, the company ended its multi-year partnership with Apple in 2020.

Intel's business has seemingly been in a freefall over the last five years. However, recent moves have seen the company gradually turn things around, and could lead its stock to skyrocket over the long term.

Last year, Intel announced a plan to restructure by transitioning to a foundry model specializing in manufacturing. The company expects the new model to save up to $10 billion by 2025 and help it achieve non-GAAP (adjusted) gross margins of 60%.

Additionally, the tech giant launched a new line of AI chips in April, unveiling its Gaudi3 AI accelerator. Intel says the chips beat Nvidia's GPUs by 50% in inference and 40% in power efficiency.

Intel posted its earnings for the first quarter of 2024 on April 25, with revenue rising 9% year over year to $13 billion. The company has yet to see a significant return on its investment in AI, but the combination of switching to a foundry model and AI appears to be moving Intel in the right direction. From Q4 2023 to Q1 2024, Intel's free cash flow increased by $2 billion, from a negative $14 billion to a negative $12 billion.

It'll take time, but patient investors could be in for a big payday as Intel continues to rebuild its business. And with a price-to-sales ratio of 2, compared to Nvidia's 37 and Advanced Micro Devices' 11, Intel is potentially the best-valued chip stock.

Intel is lekker bezig.

    What do the Analysts Think?
Clearly, options traders are pricing in a big move for Intel shares, but what is the fundamental picture for the company? Currently, Intel is a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell) in the Semiconductor - General industry that ranks in the Bottom 25% of our Zacks Industry Rank. Over the last 30 days, no analyst has increased their earnings estimates for the current quarter, while four have dropped their estimates. The net effect has taken our Zacks Consensus Estimate for the current quarter from 25 cents per share to 11 cents in that period.
