Larry Summers: Bitcoin has potential ‘to be a very, very important development’ 02/25/2014 Filed Under: BTC - Bitcoin by Andrew Moran Former United States Treasury Secretary and Federal Reserve Chair candidate Larry Summers sat down with Morning Money during the National Association for Business Economics policy conference and the former Obama administration official was asked about www.pfhub.com/news/bitcoin-btc/. His answer was a positive one, a surprise considering that most of his peers have been dismissive of the digital currency. According to Summers, the virtual currency “has the potential to be a very, very important development.” He explained that different sectors of the economy are changing because of information technology and noted the exorbitant fees an individual has to pay to use a debit card or access their money at an ATM is still in existence. BitcoinThis is why he isn’t surprised that the private sector has developed some kind of technology to diminish the fees that come with financial transactions. Summers says the attempts will consist of different elements “and certainly Bitcoin is an innovative approach in that regard.” “I am very mindful that there have been other things that came out of Silicon Valley that seemed very flakey to people on the outside and then proved to be an enormous deal,” said Summers. “Very serious economists thought that the Internet was going to be no more important than the fax machine so I’m not willing to dismiss Bitcoin. At the same time, I do think it’s important to recognize that it can’t and won’t flourish as a way of avoiding legal protections.” This is one of the first policy officials to somewhat endorse bitcoin. Bitcoin hasn’t been able to garner support from some of the biggest names in politics and business, including JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, former Federal Reserve Chair Alan Greenspan and Berkshire Hathaway Vice-Chairman Charlie Munger. With a growing number of esteemed officials jumping on the bitcoin train, it remains to be seen if bitcoiners themselves remain on that locomotive. With the news of Mt. Gox apparently offline and the value decreasing below $500, will bitcoin investors stay with the cryptocurrency? Bitcoin will survive despite MtGox debacle Despite the Japanese exchange going offline and rumours of millions in theft, the digital currency will continue to evolve Phillip Inman, economics correspondent theguardian.com, Tuesday 25 February 2014 17.18 GMT Bitcoin Bitcoin will survive the setback over the Tokyo-based MtGox exchange. Photograph: Jim Urquhart/Reuters Bitcoin is here to stay, despite a little hiccup in Japan. The digital currency, seen by its promoters as a super-efficient way to pay online, has suffered a setback with the Tokyo-based MtGox business, that once boasted it was the largest bitcoin exchange in the world, evaporating, at least for now. This would mean little if it could explain where bitcoins worth several million pounds held in its databanks have gone. The owners say they have yet to get an explanation. There is a strong rumour, based on a supposedly leaked report from the exchange, that theft accounts for around 744,000 missing bitcoins, or 6% of the entire world stock. With a bitcoin valued at more than $500 before the story broke, the theft could leave users more than $370m out of pocket. Such a huge loss would engulf most businesses in a welter of lawsuits. The digital currency was already battered by criticism pointing out its popularity with criminal gangs seeking to evade regulators or anti-fraud police. Critics also highlighted its lack of government support and the volatile price, which soared above $1,200 before Christmas before falling back below $420 on Tuesday. Techies claim they are the equivalent of Klondyke miners with a pick and shovel chipping away at rocks dotted with ore. In a sense that is how they come by their booty, except that the chipping is done by an algorithm and the whole exercise performed on a PC, perhaps from the safety of their bedroom. In a masterstroke, the currency's creator set a limit on the amount that could be generated, making everyone think that its limited supply would mean the price can only go up. That part of the plan at least seems to be unravelling. But even if the MtGox debacle hurts bitcoin beyond repair, it will be back in another guise – if only because digital currencies give clever people who lack the interpersonal skills to make it in business a chance to make a quick million bucks.

The Two-Bit Idiot I'm an entrepreneur and former VC who makes the business case for #Bitcoin on its journey from speculative investment to world-changing utility. Truth-teller. You can sign up for my daily bitcoin news digest, the "Daily Bit" by visiting: eepurl.com/JgGy5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Final Goxing Earlier this week, I published a document I received from a reliable source entitled “Crisis Strategy Draft”, which was purportedly a roadmap to show how Mt. Gox could recover from insolvency despite the mind-blowing loss of nearly 750,000 customer bitcoins. Since that initial leak, I have had a number of conversations with industry insiders who have spoken about the situation both on and off the record. They have confirmed the best news possible for Bitcoin given the damning evidence documented in the leaked presentation: Mt. Gox acted alone in its deceit, and ultimately failed in its desperation, to find an investor willing to bail them out. Although Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpeles would only admit that the leaked document was “more or less authentic” during an interview with Fox Business, I have confirmed that it was, in fact, prepared by Mt. Gox representatives. The presentation was created (at least in part) by employees at global consulting firm Mandalah. The actual author(s) of Mt. Gox’s 27 page business plan (another leaked Mt. Gox document) may be ambiguous, but the final publisher of the file was revealed to be one of Mandalah’s junior employees in Tokyo. Representatives from Mandalah declined to elaborate on any specifics regarding its relationship with Mt. Gox, citing confidentiality agreements, but they did claim to have never been contracted by Mt. Gox to do “strategic planning” and say they lacked access to sensitive financial information or customer data. A representative clarified: “Our mission with MtGox has always been to help them create better products and services…our main interest is in bitcoin and creating amazing experiences with it, and MtGox’s customers are the #1 thing on our minds these days.” A source claims that the same junior staffer who published the business plan document also attended an alleged emergency investor meeting just one day after the “Crisis Strategy Draft” was created. According to that source, it was at this meeting in which Karpeles and colleague Gonzague Gay-Bouchery first outlined the extent of Mt. Gox’s losses. This meeting triggered a chain reaction of events in which the solicited investors rebuffed Karpeles and his colleagues, demanded they come clean to customers and stakeholders immediately, and then notified other industry executives, including those at the Bitcoin Foundation, of the catastrophic losses at Mt. Gox. This group of executives promptly reached out to regulatory authorities and began crafting a joint statement condemning Mt. Gox. Sources also tell me that multiple investors who were approached restricted their own employees from buying or selling bitcoin themselves as soon as they realized the extent of the damage at Mt. Gox. Mt. Gox has allegedly never conducted a single audit of its customer deposits, and it is believed that Karpeles may have been the only one within the company to have knowledge of how to actually tap the exchange’s cold storage. It remains unclear exactly how this type of storage leak could have happened over a multi-year period without any knowledge on the part of the executives at Mt. Gox. As a result of Karpeles’ apparent “Wizard of Oz” status within the organization, it also appears unlikely that the true technical cause of the leak will be fully understood until the embattled CEO speaks. Whether that will happen during an interview or a possible criminal case is unclear. The latter seems likely, however, as one source believes that Karpeles knew about the pervasive damage of the transaction malleability attacks for several weeks and was engaging in an arbitrage scheme that leveraged the depressed Mt. Gox price to reap gains on other exchanges. This was allegedly happening well before the exchange’s breaking point this past weekend. Mark Karpeles and Mt. Gox representatives were unreachable for comment, despite repeated attempts. However, three major industry players that were initially tied to Mt. Gox “acquisition” rumors have either released statements or confirmed (via backchannels) unequivocal denials of any improper ties to Mt. Gox. The Bitcoin Foundation, Blockchain.info and SecondMarket have by all accounts acted ethically and professionally in the face of a serious scandal. Their speedy clarifications and apparent cooperation with authorities is commendable and suggests that Mt. Gox was a mere bad apple in an otherwise good bunch. Mt. Gox lived among the Bitcoin community for several years as an early pioneer. Luckily for the industry, it appears to have died alone. (UPDATE: Mandalah representatives reached out to clarify their relationship with Mt. Gox after this post was originally published.) SecondMarket To Launch The First US Bitcoin Exchange One Unit of Bitcoin Worth $50,000? See Why Somes Experts Say Yes While the world was preoccupied with the Mt. Gox collapse on Monday night, it was what wasn’t being discussed that was far more significant. Sunday night, just before the big collapse, Dan Primack, Senior Editor for Fortune, received an email from the CEO of SecondMarket, Barry Silbert, suggesting that they meet the next day, much sooner than they had formerly planned. Silbert had a major announcement to make, which at the time, for some unknown reason, needed to be accelerated; however, we now know that “that reason” was Mt. Gox. The announcement, which received little attention do to the circumstances, was that SecondMarket is planning to launch the first ever U.S. based bitcoin exchange -- which many have speculated would finally bring the digital currency to the mainstream. Furthermore; the exchange would bring bitcoin to the institutional level; essentially, making it very easy for average investors to purchase, sell, and invest in the digital currency. While accredited investors have already been able to dabble in bitcoin through SecondMarket’s Investment Trust, Silbert spoke on the future of bitcoin back in December saying, "We're three to six months away from Wall Street dollars moving into Bitcoin in a big way," It seems that Silbert was likely referring to what we now know to be the first bitcoin exchange in the US, he went on to say, "Once Wall Street starts putting money into Bitcoin -- we're talking about hundreds of millions, billions of dollars moving in -- it's going to have a pretty dramatic effect on the price." Perhaps the most favorable component of the SecondMarket exchange when compared to the former most prominent bitcoin exchange, Mt. Gox, is the fact that it bears no resemblance. In Barry Silbert’s words, the model “looks nothing like” Mt. Gox—he went on to explain that it would be "more like a traditional exchange…like the New York Stock Exchange, where you have regulated investors who form the spokes of a hub” While hurdles still remain in regards to regulation as most states do require exchanges to have money-transmitter licenses, SecondMarket has already obtained a broker-dealer license, which includes and permits the exchange of currency. Meanwhile, the anticipation of a decision on possible regulations from the superintendent of the New York Department of Financial Services, Benjamin Lawsky persist. The superintendent had these remarks in regards to the Mt. Gox situation: "This is by no means a death knell for bitcoin or virtual currencies, but it underscores the potential benefits of regulation"
do 27 feb 2014, 17:01 | Bitcoin overleeft Mt. Gox-debacle Sten Lemmens Deze week verdween 's werelds grootste bitcoinbeurs Mt. Gox nu weg is.
