Tokyo, Japan, February 17th, 2014 Dear MtGox Customers, We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the recent suspension of external bitcoin transfers. Fortunately, as we announced on Saturday we have now implemented a solution that should enable withdrawals and mitigate any issues caused by transaction malleability (please see our previous statements for details on this issue). Thanks to our friends at Blockchain.info, MtGox now has a workaround that will use a unique identifier created by Blockchain to show whether transactions have been modified or not. This will prevent any fraudulent use of the malleability issue and protect the assets of our customers. Resuming Withdrawals! With this new system in place, MtGox should be able to resume withdrawals soon. At the beginning we will do so at a moderated pace and with new daily/monthly limits in place to prevent any problems with the new system and to take into account current market conditions. In order to launch the new system, we are going through the following steps: Re-indexing the entire Blockchain (approx. 32 million entries) Fully deploying the new NTX ID Implementing a new bitcoin withdrawal queue that needs to be tested We will update everyone again by Thursday at the latest. Additionally, you may have noticed that we have added a new login system that sends you an email when you successfully access your account. This is an additional security layer, but as always we strongly encourage our customers to use the 2-step authorization options available in our Security Center. Thank you again for your support, and we look forward to resume bitcoin withdrawals as quickly as possible. Best regards, MtGox Team

Stanford economist Susan Athey on how to analyze Bitcoin's value on fundamentals. By David Z. Morris 131104103519-bitcoin-mining-620xaFORTUNE -- In the last year, and with increasing intensity following the early December price spike that briefly put Bitcoin above $1,200, critics have sounded the alarm that the price is a bubble. Some, like Felix Salmon, have recognized the value of the cryptocurrency, but argued that it is simply overvalued, much like pre-2008 real estate. Others haven't stopped there, claiming that bitcoin is all bubble, at the center of which is little or no intrinsic value -- something closer to a Dutch tulip mania than a real estate bubble. Those making the latter case have included Nobel Laureate Robert Shiller and former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan. It seems reasonable enough to be skeptical of a digital currency unbacked by any state or real-world goods. But bitcoin optimists argue that what "backs" bitcoin is the functionality of its frictionless, low-cost, decentralized payments system. As Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire put it at fact-finding hearings held by the New York Department of Financial Services in January, "The growth in the value of bitcoin is a put option on its adoption as a payments platform." An anonymous viral e-mail circulating among bitcoin watchers and partisans lays out a few simple hypothetical usage and adoption scenarios, and their consequences for bitcoin's price. If Amazon.com (AMZN) adopted bitcoin for all payments, its volume of $38 billion, divided by a supply of (at the time of the email's writing) about 7 million bitcoin, would make each bitcoin worth $5,400. If $300 billion in international remittance was conducted in bitcoin, that volume alone would push the price to $42,000. Adding these, along with online poker and gas station transactions, would lead to a total transaction volume of $602 billion -- and a bitcoin, even at today's expanded supply of 12 million coins, worth $50,000. "Those numbers are good ones to start with. In some sense, that's like a maximum," says Susan Athey, a professor of economics at the Stanford Graduate School of Business who has been studying bitcoin. Few would realistically argue that bitcoin will service 100% of even these silos in the near term, but the volume/supply ratio is the starting point for understanding bitcoin price -- as more consumers or organizations choose to use bitcoin, increased volume will drive the price up. Building from that basic formula, Athey adds a variety of variables to build an analytic framework. The first is velocity -- how frequently a bitcoin can be spent. Because bitcoin, unlike paper money, is very low-friction, there's the possibility of a very high-velocity bitcoin, if, for example, vendors or traders only held bitcoin very briefly, cashing it in and out to government currencies on either end of transfers. That, Athey says, would allow a small volume of bitcoin to process a large volume of payments, keeping the price of bitcoin relatively low. Then there are even less predictable and higher-risk variables. Obviously, bitcoin's future price depends hugely on the adoption rate of the cryptocurrency model. Athey believes that the cryptocurrency model of distributed ledgers is "a really simple, powerful technology that is superior to existing technology," and there are major drivers that point toward wide adoption. One fascinating adoption scenario frequently floated among bitcoin adherents is specific to retail. Online retailers' razor-thin profit margins get a huge boost when they pay a bitcoin processor's fee of about 1% instead of credit card fees of 2-3%. How long will it be, some ask, before a major retailer offers a discount for those paying in bitcoin, as a way to maximize that increased profit margin? Such a discount could drive significant bitcoin adoption in a very short timeframe. Still, Athey believes that cryptocurrency also faces challenges that could kill it in its crib, above all from government regulations. "There's [only] a small number of big countries," and adverse regulation in just a few of them could render cryptocurrency far less functional in the long term. MORE: Why venture capitalists are right to be crazy about bitcoin It's just as uncertain whether, even if cryptocurrency becomes part of how we transact, bitcoin will be the only, or even the most adopted. "There's a big probability that there's a zero market share for bitcoin" in the future, says Athey, as competing cryptocurrency systems integrate desired features, better functionality, or simply more effective marketing campaigns. The price plunge following recent revelations about "transaction malleability" in the bitcoin code point to the dangers of even perceived systemic flaws. A division in the cryptocurrency market could keep future values of individual systems, including bitcoin, relatively low. (Disclosure: Athey consults with Ripple Labs, creators of a competing cryptocurrency system.) The outcomes of all of these risks are still very hard to predict, and Athey thinks this explains the current volatility in bitcoin's price. "There's no reason to think right now that all reasonable people should agree on the regulatory reaction of various governments. [And] even if everyone was just broadcasting the fundamentals, a lot of information has been coming out about the fundamentals. It's not surprising that the value should be changing." Still, this is much different than the impression from some corners that the price of bitcoin is nothing more than a shared fantasy. While the email pointing to a $50,000 bitcoin is imprecise to say the least, it's a starting point. A more rigorous mathematical model integrating demand projections with probabilities of certain make-or-break contingencies isn't just possible -- it likely already exists, in various versions, across various investors' hard drives. For Susan Athey, though, the question of a specific cryptocurrency's value seems less exciting than contemplating the broad changes that bitcoin's innovation will bring to finance. "When you really think about what we do today in the banking system ... it's kind of stunning that that's the way we do business in 2014. It seems very natural that things will change. It's only surprising that they haven't changed already."
Mt.

Bitcoin Experiment in Real Life What to know about the virtual currency By Geoffrey A. Fowler Updated Feb. 18, 2014 9:04 p.m. ET Personal Tech Columnist Geoffrey Fowler spent a week shopping with the Internet's mysterious bitcoin currency. The result? Cupcakes and Grumpy Cat. Deep in the unregulated underbelly of the Internet, bitcoin is the crypto-currency of the realm, making as many headlines for its volatile price as it has for its popularity with criminals seeking anonymity. These are reasons enough to keep most people away. But bitcoin keeps popping up in more places as a way to pay for legal, everyday things. So I spent a week using the virtual currency and my experience surprised me: It was neither anonymous nor shadowy. Though my hunt for places to spend bitcoin did turn up a questionable massage parlor, it didn't require venturing into fishy corners of the Internet. I used bitcoin to buy cupcakes and sushi at local shops, and I got a Grumpy Cat sweatshirt at Overstock.com. Bitcoin can be used for more everyday purchases, such as cupcakes. Geoffrey Fowler/The Wall Street Journal Bitcoin isn't ready to replace credit cards or PayPal. It lacks wide acceptance, consumer protections and stability. The currency is in crisis right now, after hacking attacks disabled two of the biggest exchanges, making bitcoin lose a third of its value. During the course of a week, my own bitcoin lost as much as 7% of its value. But that isn't stopping me from keeping a small wallet of the first major Internet currency. I'm no speculator, I'm not investing my savings in bitcoin, or recommending that anyone does that. I'm interested in what it might enable—a "tip jar" for online art, or small daily donations to charity. And if you're intrigued, too, this column will hopefully help you keep from losing your shirt. The good news is you don't have to put much money at risk to try it out. I didn't even buy an entire "coin"—just 0.25 of one, or about $160. I signed up for a virtual wallet, which promises to safeguard the string of code that is your money, and exchanges dollars for bitcoin (and vice versa). I recommend Coinbase, whose wallet connects to your regular bank account and charges a small fee, about 1%, with each trade. Are these people trustworthy? Coinbase is backed by some big names in Silicon Valley, but has nothing like the government-backed guarantees of using dollars in a regular bank. In the past 15 months, Coinbase says it has set up nearly one million consumer wallets. What surprised me most is how Coinbase strips some anonymity out of the currency. To buy bitcoin, it asked me for my bank account information, my credit-card numbers, even my bank website login details. The company doesn't retain all that info but it is used to speed up the verification process, which can normally take four days. The point of gathering all this information, says CEO Brian Armstrong, is to prevent "shenanigans," so the traditional banks will see Coinbase as legitimate. Coinbase has done a good job of simplifying bitcoin use. To pay for sushi at a local shop, I used the Coinbase app on my Android phone to scan the QR code presented by my server. (Apple hasn't yet approved the Coinbase app for iPhone, but you can make payments via the Web.) Once I confirmed my sushi payment, the money transferred instantly. For consumers, bitcoin's speed can be a dual-edged sword: If something goes wrong, there's no third party to intercede and get your money back. And returns can be tricky on a currency with a wildly fluctuating value. (Fortunately, I had no complaints about my sushi.) Making a purchase online works much the same. At the Overstock.com checkout page, I chose to pay by bitcoin, and then scanned an on-screen code with my phone. So why bother using bitcoin? Bitcoin doesn't really solve mainstream consumer problems like speed and convenience, says Mark T. Williams, who teaches finance at Boston University and is a bitcoin skeptic. "It solves a problem if you want to send stuff secretly." Though Coinbase and other wallets collect information about you, you can still try to make transfers or payments anonymous. If someone gives you bitcoin, you can set up a Coinbase wallet without entering many personal details—though you'll need to verify yourself if you want to turn your bitcoin back into dollars. Getting merchants on board will be a slog. Some 3,000 businesses around the world accept bitcoin for payment, according to Coinmap.org. There are more than 60 in the San Francisco Bay Area where I live, but I still struggled to find places worth spending my bitcoin. When I did, paying with bitcoin was usually speedy, but certainly not faster than using a credit card or cash. Overstock is planning to offer a financial incentive to paying with bitcoin. Since bitcoin payments save the retailer credit-card fees, Overstock will give bitcoin customers 1% back on their purchases (in store credit). So far, the killer app for bitcoin may be international transfers, a process made costly and slow by traditional banks and services like PayPal. I tried sending $10 worth of bitcoin to my friend Kevin in Hong Kong. In minutes, he was up on Coinbase and zapping the money back to me. I sent it over the Pacific again, impressed at our ability to play ping pong with a financial process that normally takes days. But when Kevin tried to spend his bitcoin in Hong Kong, opportunities were slim. He found a massage parlor that accepts it, but his wife wasn't impressed with his proposal to sample its services. Eventually Kevin found a florist (wife-approved), but I hadn't sent him enough to buy a bouquet. To buy more bitcoin, a legitimate-seeming Hong Kong wallet company asked for his passport, proof of address—and more time. Someday, all of this might be easier. Taking a vacation with bitcoin might provide a way to avoid international currency and credit card fees. But that day isn't here yet. "Some day"—I found myself thinking that a lot while using Bitcoin. It may be a currency of the future, but it's still looking for a reason to be useful in the present.online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB100014...
Forget Tulip Mania, the Netherlands is Leading Bitcoin Innovation Kadhim Shubber (@kadhimshubber) | Published on February 19, 2014 at 15:46 The country has long been famed for its flower industry, and the expansive fields of colourful flowers do create a mesmerizing spectacle. When discussed in the same breath as bitcoin, however, Dutch tulips are an insult. ‘Tulip mania’, a phenomenon in the early 17th Century where tulips traded at extraordinarily high prices and then spectacularly crashed in value, is pointed to as a historical analogue of the current controversy surrounding bitcoin. In December, the former president of the Dutch Central Bank, Nout Wellink, dismissed bitcoin in scathing terms, saying that the “façade” and hype around bitcoin would eventually die: “This is worse than tulip mania. At least then you got a tulip [for your investment], now you get nothing.” No doubt there are many that furiously disagree with his comments, but it’s ironic that a moment in Dutch history is being used to bash bitcoin, because today the country is a hub for bitcoin innovation. Bitcoin boom BitPay chose to locate its European headquarters there, you can now get home delivery from around 5,000 restaurants using bitcoin, and a bitcoin-specific point-of-sale system for bars and hospitality was launched by a Dutch company in October. It’s also CoinDesk’s fourth largest traffic source after the US, UK and Canada. In the words of Moe Levin, organizer of Bitcoin Miami: “I do a lot of travelling, and have seen what it’s like around the world to purchase and use coins, and here in Amsterdam, it’s one of the best.” The first bitcoin company in the Netherlands was an exchange called Bitonic, which launched on 1st May 2012 by a trio of high-school friends, Jouke Hofman, Niels van Groningen and Robert de Waard, with a shared passion for programming and games development. Bank gamble Frustrated with trying to trade on international exchanges like Mt. Gox, they wanted to build a native, home-bred system. Bitonic now trades around 300 to 400 BTC per day. Although their success was never assured, they had one extremely important factor in their favour: iDeal, a Dutch e-payment platform with a 50%+ market share in the country. “iDeal has a fixed fee and zero chargebacks, so it’s perfect for automated bitcoin trading,” says Daan Kleiman, a spokesperson for Bitonic. Bitonic’s first bank was ING, which took a punt on them when other banks were more sceptical about bitcoin. They now have accounts at three of the four big banks in the Netherlands: ABN Amro and SNS Bank, as well as the aforementioned ING, says Kleiman. “They are very interested and open minded about bitcoin now, and we often give presentations and workshops at their various headquarters.” Only Rabobank is still resistant to bitcoin businesses, with Kleiman calling it “very anti-bitcoin”. But generally, he says, things are much easier now: “We had some ups and downs with banks, mainly downs in the beginning, but things are looking up now […] Late in 2012, we ran into trouble with banks when criminals discovered ways to plunder hacked bank accounts using iDeal and our service. We quickly had fraud-detection systems in place to stop most of the criminal activity, but it took us a while to get connected to the correct people at the different banks.” Those comments will be familiar to anyone involved with a bitcoin business in many jurisdictions. Resistance to bitcoin, whether pragmatic or ideological, has only been half the story; getting the public to engage too, has been a problem, though one that is far smaller now than it has been in the past. Big plans For the future, Bitonic are hoping to launch a peer-to-peer trading platform, but are waiting for a license from the Dutch Central Bank. “It’s technically ready, but we won’t open it up for trading until our licence is approved,” says Kleiman. They aren’t the only Dutch exchange with expansion plans. In January, Bitplaats announced that it was extending its service to Belgium. So, the land of tulip mania is now home to another surging trade. If the bitcoin crash fantasies of some come to fruition, the Netherlands will be synonymous again with exuberant folly. However, the likelihood is that a crash will remain a fantasy, and perhaps bitcoin will come to be indebted to Dutch innovation.
