Jan De Nul Completes Wind Turbines Installation TPC Offshore Wind

Jan De Nul Group has completed the installation of all 21 offshore wind turbines for the 109.2 MW Taiwan Power Company Offshore Windfarm Phase 1 Project Demonstration, including the installation of all subsea cables. The project teams of Jan De Nul and Hitachi now proceed with the termination and commissioning process of the complete offshore wind farm. The project was kicked off in September 2018 with the preparatory onshore cable works. On 12 June 2021, Jan De Nul’s Offshore Jack-Up Installation Vessel Taillevent successfully completed the installation of the last 5.2 MW Hitachi wind turbine for Taiwan Power Company.

The TPC Offshore Wind Farm near Fangyuan, 8 kilometres off the West coast of Taiwan, is constructed in a region where typhoons are very common. Each 5.2 MW wind turbine is installed on a jacket foundation with transition piece, anchored to the seabed using four steel pin piles, and equipped with wind turbines with a downwind rotor. Consortium partner Hitachi Ltd. pioneered this design by obtaining the Wind Turbine Class T certification, an international standard on wind-resistant design recognising the need in regions subject to frequent typhoons.

Jan De Nul kicked off the construction works in September 2018 with the preparatory onshore cable duct installation works to connect the existing onshore substation to the cable interface near shore. Fabrication of the different foundation components was initiated in 2019. The first foundations left the South Korean fabrication yards in April 2020 to the offshore wind farm site in Taiwan. In June 2020, Jan De Nul installed the first pin piles and connected the first export cable to shore. By early August of that same year, the very first jacket foundation was installed and anchored to the seabed. And on 15 September the first wind turbine was erected.

Jan De Nul Group is responsible for the design, fabrication and installation of the foundations, the provision of the offshore vessel for the installation of the wind turbines, the supply and installation of the cables off- and onshore as well as upgrading an electrical substation. Hitachi Ltd. is in charge of manufacturing, assembly, installation and other works related to the offshore wind turbines with downwind rotor.

Jan De Nul Installs Formosa 2 Export Cables

Jan De Nul Group’s Cable Laying Vessel Willem de Vlamingh has successfully installed the four export cables with a total length of 34 km on the 376MW Formosa 2 offshore wind farm in Taiwan. This milestone marks the next step in the development of the Formosa 2 Offshore Wind Farm. Thanks to her shallow draft design, the Willem de Vlamingh was able to position itself close to the beach thereby limiting the shore pull distance to around 1,250 metres. At the beach landing, the cables have been pulled through four HDD ducts into the transition joint bays. The Willem de Vlamingh also acted as Trenching Support Vessel which, together with TSHD Niña and a Starfish outfitted with an in-house designed jet-skid tool, in the meantime also successfully completed the export cable burial works.

For the installation of the export cables, Jan De Nul Group relied on its local supply chain network for the performance of the beach pull assistance works, dive support, the installation of the HDD ducts, as well as the supply and operation of support vessels. This local network was set up with the support of Jan De Nul’s long-standing partner Hung Hua Corporation.

Installation of foundations and subsea cables

For the Formosa 2 project, Jan De Nul Group is responsible for the foundation design, fabrication and installation, as well as for the design, supply and installation of the subsea cables.

Tiel-Waardenburg Dyke Reinforcement Awarded to Van Oord

The Rivierenland Water Board has awarded the Tiel-Waardenburg dyke reinforcement project to the Mekante Diek consortium, a collaboration between Ploegam, Van Oord and Dura Vermeer. The Waal dyke between Tiel and Waardenburg is to be reinforced over a length of more than 19 kilometres to meet the current safety standard. The three consortium partners have the specialist knowledge and expertise needed to make this project a success. Their combined experience in implementing large-scale dyke reinforcement projects will be deployed to protect the residents of the area against high water on the river Waal after completion. The Waal dyke between Tiel and Waardenburg is part of the Dutch flood protection programme.

The motto of the tender is ‘smart reinforcement together’. This approach centres on seeking sustainable solutions. One example is the consortium’s choice to transport as much as possible by water. This means that people in the surrounding area will experience less inconvenience in the course of the project. The consortium will also focus on the use of local soil, emission-free execution and the efficient handling of materials. The dyke reinforcement is in line with the client's sustainability targets.

The Tiel-Waardenburg dyke reinforcement project borders on a Natura 2000 site and a large part of the dyke lies alongside residential areas. The project partly consists of a two-phase contract. For the structural solutions, the optimisations offered will be developed in cooperation with the client to produce the final design. In the second half of 2021, Ploegam, Van Oord and Dura Vermeer will start the design phase of the project in partnership with the Rivierenland Water Board. In 2023, the consortium will start with the implementation, after which the dyke will be high water-safe by October 2026.

Van Oord Empowering Local Communities in Saly in Senegal

Saly used to be one of the most popular touristic hotspots of Senegal. Unfortunately, the coastal community suffered from rising sea levels and other negative effects of accelerated climate change. When Van Oord arrived in the area, not many traces were left of the once buzzing holiday destination. The beach was gone, hotels had to use rocks and sand bags to protect themselves against the sea and tourists stayed away. Tourism is the main source of income for its 20,000 inhabitants and therefore its decline due to climate change had disastrous economic consequences. In addition, human interventions such as the construction of a small craft harbour and groynes upstream of the beaches disturbed the longshore sand transport and deposit downstream along Saly’s coast.

Van Oord was called in to reinforce the coastline and revitalise the area. The project aims to protect people, houses, economic and cultural infrastructure in the region against coastal erosion. During the project, we made sure local stakeholders were involved. We kept the local community informed and we employed local people, so that about 40% of the workforce was Senegalese. Once Van Oord started, locals immediately began using the beach, entrepreneurs set up small businesses again, hundreds of children could safely play on the beach and some even saw a beach for the first time in their lives. Finally, fisherman could work safely again.

Jan De Nul Using Biofuel for Dredging Works in North Germany

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    07 Oct, 2021, 6:30 am

For the first time in Germany, the dredging company Jan De Nul Group from Luxembourg is using solely second-generation biofuel for maintenance dredging works in the Port of Hamburg. This fuel contains no petroleum, but processed vegetable waste oil as a raw material, entirely in line with the principles of a sustainable circular economy

Jan De Nul Nassbaggerei und Wasserbau GmbH has been awarded an important contract for maintenance dredging works in the Port of Hamburg within the scope of a European award procedure. Two suction hopper dredgers, 'Kaishuu' and 'Alexander von Humboldt', will execute these dredging works between June and December 2021, thus ensuring accessibility to numerous important terminals in the Port of Hamburg.

Thanks to the use of biofuel during these works, emissions of particulate matter and sulphur compounds are also significantly reduced, as combustion is much more efficient than with conventional diesel fuel.

Dredging works are indispensable to ensure the accessibility of the Port of Hamburg and its terminals. This is the only way to ensure that goods can be transported far into the hinterland by sea-going vessels, which are particularly environmentally friendly compared to other modes of transport. Many hundreds of kilometres that do not have to be travelled by truck or train are a significant contribution to climate protection.

Van Oord Bags Subsea Rock Installation Work at Ormen Lange Phase 3

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    12 Oct, 2021, 6:30 am

Van Oord has been awarded a contract related to the Ormen Lange Field operated by A/S Norske Shell. This contract for the specialised seabed interventions services of Subsea Rock Installation is a continuation of earlier cooperation between Shell and Van Oord on the Ormen Lange Field.

The Ormen Lange Field is a natural gas field in Norway, located in the Norwegian Sea, situated 120 kilometres northwest of Kristiansund. With depths of the seabed that vary between 850 and 1,100 metres, the natural conditions at the site are considered harsh. The stormy seas, uneven seabed and strong underwater currents put great demand on Van Oord’s expertise and flexible fallpipe vessel Stornes during the pre and post-lay activities of Subsea Rock Installation.

The project scope involves the seabed intervention works consisting of pre-lay structure foundations, pipeline and umbilical route preparation. In addition, the post-lay SRI for structures protection, pipeline and umbilical cover related to the new development of a wet gas subsea compression project.

Once the gas subsea compression expansion is finalised the overall gas recovery rate will increase from 75% to 85%, used for the consumption of households in the UK and continental Europe. Being powered with hydro-generated electricity, Ormen Lange is considered one of the lowest carbon intensity fields in Norway, which resonates well with Van Oord’s company goals to contribute to the energy transition.
