    Apple is picking up its work on an Apple-designed car and is aiming to create a fully autonomous vehicle, reports Bloomberg. Apple is "refocusing" the project around full self-driving vehicles, a goal that other car manufacturers have not been able to achieve.

    Work on an Apple Car began way back in 2014, and since then, the project has gone through multiple transformations. At one point, rumors suggested Apple had abandoned its plans for a full vehicle and would instead focus on software, but rumors began picking up again in 2020. It's now been made clear that Apple intends to launch its own vehicle.

    As Bloomberg explains, Apple worked on two vehicle paths, one with limited self-driving capabilities and a second with full self-driving functionality that does not require human intervention, and the company will now pursue this second path under the leadership of Kevin Lynch, who joined the project earlier this year. Apple has hit a "milestone" in developing the self-driving car system, and has finished the core work on the chip that will power the first car.

    The Apple car chip is the most advanced component that Apple has developed internally and is made up primarily of neural processors that can handle the artificial intelligence needed for autonomous driving. The chip's capabilities mean it will run hot and likely require the development of a sophisticated cooling system.

    The hope is to develop a vehicle that can spare customers from driving fatigue when they're on long trips. But building an actual car - for an auto industry outsider like Apple - will require partnerships. The company has discussed deals with multiple manufacturers and has considered potentially building the vehicle in the U.S.
    Apple wants to design a car that lacks a steering wheel or pedals, and with an interior that's aimed at hands-off driving. Bloomberg said that Apple has considered a design similar to the Lifestyle Vehicle from Canoo, in which passengers sit along the sides of the vehicle, facing one another.

    Apple is still discussing the inclusion of a steering wheel, which may be required so people can take over in an emergency situation An iPad-like tablet could be in the middle of the vehicle, which passengers would be able to interact with.

    Apple wants its car to be safer than those manufactured by Waymo and Tesla, with redundancies and failsafes to avoid failures. The vehicle will be electric, with Apple discussing charging that's compatible with the combined charging system so Apple vehicle owners can use a global network of chargers.

    Using Lexus SUVs outfitted with LiDAR scanners and other equipment, Apple has been testing its self-driving system. Bloomberg says that Apple will test the new processor that it has developed in those cars, along with new self-driving sensors.

    Apple is said to be aiming to launch its self-driving car in four years, which would put a debut right around 2025. Whether Apple will be able to hit that goal will depend on whether Apple can develop a full self-driving system. Should it not be able to meet its aims, Apple could delay launch or sell a car that's less technologically advanced. The timeline is aggressive, and Apple is ramping up hiring to meet deadlines.

    Alle speculaties zijn leuk, en mijn positie is op dit moment alleen aandelen en gekochte calls, want calls schrijven levert te weinig op. Dat kan na de expiratie misschien weer/nog.

    Van mij mag de koers dus nu naar de 100+ , maar ik begrijp de koper van de short turbo’s. TomTom kennende wordt deze ‘torenhoge’ koers weer neergesabeld en kan het ‘revolutionaire’ Indigo nieuws zomaar gepaard gaan met een jankverhaal. Een hogere koers betekent nou eenmaal meer belasting betalen en daar houden de (ex) miljardairs niet van. Dat is iets voor Jan met de pet.

    Apple (AAPL) - Get Apple Inc. (AAPL) Report shares surged to a fresh record high Thursday amid reports that the world's biggest tech company is accelerating its plans to build a self-driving car, and could unveil its debut model as early as 2025.

    Bloomberg News reported that the tech giant is aiming for a fully autonomous vehicle, with new division head Kevin Lynch looking for a faster-than-forecast release.

    The report follows speculation that Apple, which has long been connected to an autonomous driving project, had visited automakers and suppliers in Asia, including Toyota Motor Co. (TM) - Get Toyota Motor Corp. Sponsored ADR Report, as part of its early-stage preparations.

    Citigroup analyst Jim Suva aruged in March that an electric car rollout could propel Apple to a $3 trillion market cap, while Wedbush analysts Dan Ives, a long-time Apple bull, told TheStreet in August that a so-called Apple Car is "not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when."

    Ik ben vooral benieuwd of er vraag naar is, maar er was ook geen vraag naar de Iphone….. Steve Jobs heeft die vraag gecreëerd, hij wist wat mensen nodig hadden……… Taco noemde Steve ook nog heel even kort……. TT weet klaarblijkelijk wat de in-vehicle user experience moet zijn om een overload aan informatie te voorkomen……. Ik denk best dat ze genoeg goede UX’ers in dienst hebben die toe zijn aan een nieuwe uitdaging en hier iets fraais voor kunnen bedenken. Ik sluit niet uit dat ze in de nieuwe Jeep Grand Cherokee al ervaring hebben opgedaan met Connect5 en de vele devices..

    Wie weet doen ze wel wat samen met Bosch, Hella, Denso of een ander. Benieuwd welke OEM als eerste IndiGO afneemt en of dit gelijk de 30e wordt medegedeeld.

    Wow - we are getting closer to confirming that Tesla is using TomTom maps and navigation.

    ps : Does TomTom have waypoints ? Is it more expensive .... that might explain why Tesla has been reluctant to add waypoints.

    Op het Tesla forum zijn ze druk bezig wijzigingen door te geven aan TomTom om te zien of en hoe snel Tesla dit oppakt. Het gaat met name mis in de Tesla FSD beta op punten waar TomTom maps niet actueel zijn…… leuke zoektocht voor de US Tesla rijders….. keep you informed ;-)

    In q3 resultaat bericht staat volgende zin pag 2 onderaan:

    Greater Than is een interessante partij omdat dit bedrijf zich richt op verzekeringsbedrijven, autobouwers, fleet management en nieuw mobility. Mobiliteit = >TomTom. Het omschrijft zichzelf met zinnen als: ”See into the future. It’s a shift like when electricity replaced steam.” Op basis van AI en data kan het bedrijf individuele risico inschattingen maken die verzekeringsmaatschappijen, ride sharing bedrijven etc. kunnen gebruiken om van collectieve data naar individueel risico te gaan. Daardoor kunnen bijvoorbeeld de premies gedifferentieerd worden. Indi = Individual? Heb Goddijn meermaals over dit onderwerp horen spreken en de data van TomTom is voor dit bedrijf van (hopelijk) onschatbare waarde.

    KINTO wil voorzien in mobiliteit ongeacht de eigendomsstructuur. Het is gericht op de gebruikservaring van individu. Toyota wil niet alleen maar auto’s verkopen.

    Staat INDIGO wellicht voor INDI = individuele en GO = beweging? Gebruikerservaring centraal. Mobiliteit toegespitst op individu.

    Dan de timing: 30 november. Er is die dag in Berlijn het CTI Symposium. Dat gaat weliswaar van oudsher over transmissie en aandrijving maar ook over beweging naar elektrische auto’s en de connected car. In de brochure blz 5 staat een interessante spreker aangekondigd:

    Deze man van Toyota wordt genoemd in persbericht van TomTom toen er in 2018 een app werd ontwikkeld voor Zuid-Amerika in eerste samenwerking tussen Toyota en TomTom op dat gebied.

    Om een heel lang verhaal kort te maken: ik speculeer erop dat TomTom een rol gaat spelen binnen het KINTO project van Toyota mbt “de nieuwe mobiliteit” en dat dit 30 november wordt aangekondigd in Berlijn op CTI symposium.

    Geweldig Harry, zit je bij de recherche? ;-)
    Knap hoe je de dingen aan elkaar knoopt en respect voor je geheugen als een olifant.

    IndiGo zie ik ook als afkorting van individual / individueel. Over 15-20 jaar heeft 80% van de huidige autobezitters misschien geen auto meer en betalen ze voor/naar gebruik ipv bezit/eigendom. Dan wil je met je personal preferences in kunnen stappen in iedere auto op de hoek van de straat. De autoverzekeringen zijn daar nu al volop mee bezig, dus verstandig als TT vooruit kijkt. Het is een kwestie van tijd en komt misschien nog wel eerder dan de zelfrijdende auto (level 5)
