Nokia unveils Quillion chipset family to power next-generation massive scale access networks

    Dienstag, 08.10.2019 08:00 von GlobeNewswire - Aufrufe: 29

Quillion chipset family designed for best-in-class performance next-generation fiber and copper solutions
Combines current and next-generation fiber access technologies in a single chip, making it easier for operators to deploy future-proof networks and switch on 10Gbs services
Optimized to support time-critical and low-latency 5G transport
Delivers high-density next-generation fiber and copper solutions on the market, allowing operators to connect more people
    8 October 8 2019
Espoo, Finland – Nokia today is launching Quillion, a new family of chipsets that will power next-generation massive scale access networks. Leveraging Nokia’s extensive expertise, the Quillion chipset will allow operators to easily introduce 10G PON in their fiber networks and to serve more users from ultra-high-speed G.fast access nodes.
Sandra Motley, President of Fixed Networks at Nokia, said: “In a 5G world, consumers will expect a gigabit experience regardless if they are at home or on the go. Our Quillion chipset is designed to deliver gigabit broadband to every home, using broadband technologies like fiber to complement 5G in massive scale access networks. This allows operators to efficiently connect more people with higher speeds, and positively impacts their business case.”
For operators planning to roll out next-generation fiber access networks, the Quillion chipset powers Nokia’s 16-port Multi-PON line card, which supports both GPON and NG-PON on each port. This allows operators with an existing GPON network to simply “switch on” NG-PON services on each port without recabling or disrupting the GPON service.
Quillion has also been optimized to allow for low-latency applications that are critical for 5G transport and has built-in programmability to support intents that pave the way toward automated workflows, such as network slicing for 5G transport.

The Quillion chipset family also gives operators with copper infrastructure access to the highest density G.fast and Vplus solutions on the market. Helping to reduce rack space by 50% and power consumption by 10%, Nokia’s enhanced copper solutions with Quillion chipsets enable operators to support more customers without increasing the cabinet size. This is critical for providers confined by the capacity and space of a given cabinet or node, and eliminates investment in additional rackspace, cabinets or nodes needed to serve more customers or deliver enhanced ultra-broadband services.
Julie Kunstler, Principal Analyst at Ovum said: “Nokia’s Quillion chipset family supports diverse upgrade scenarios, whether large-scale, high-density migrations or selective migrations, across multi-vendor and multi-access technologies. It also incorporates time-critical and low-latency capabilities, enabling the use of 5G for both access and transport applications by customers. These functions are essential for operators transitioning to next-generation networks.”
    Did you know
Operators will have different approaches for NG-PON migration. Our analyses show that for massive migrations, the Multi-PON solution is better approach. In lower volume deployments, a NG-PON overlay with external co-existence element is a better fit. Nokia has full portfolio that can address any migration scenario.
The Quillion chipsets provides industry leading density and capacity enhancements to Nokia’s copper solutions that include: VDSL2: 768p (FD), Vplus: 384p (MX, FD) and G.fast: 144p 106MHz and 96p 212MHz (MX).

US pushes for Western rival to Huawei

Officials suggest funnelling money to Nokia and Ericsson to help them compete with Chinese telecoms group

The US is looking at ways to funnel money to Huawei’s European rivals, as officials warn that the Chinese company is becoming dangerously dominant in the global race for the next generation of mobile communications. Officials in the US government have suggested issuing credit to companies such as Nokia and Ericsson to enable them to match the generous financing terms that Huawei offers to its customers, according to two people with knowledge of the situation. The move is part of a wider push to fund a rival to the Chinese company, which is the largest telecoms equipment maker in the world, but which the US believes poses a security risk to it and its allies. One senior government official said: “We gave up our superiority in making telecoms equipment decades ago, and now we are realising that this might not have been the best choice for national security reasons. Almost every department and agency is desperately looking right now for ways to get back into this game.”

Washington warns India over using Huawei for 5G

“If we don’t, Huawei could soon be the only option for anyone wanting to roll out 5G networks.”Another said: “This is one of the big concerns of the government right now. Everyone from the defence department, to the commerce department, to the department of homeland security, is looking at this.” The White House declined to comment. Huawei sells 28 per cent of the world’s telecoms equipment, according to Dell’Oro, the market research company. Ericsson and Nokia are its closest rivals. Both companies declined to comment. To the consternation of the Trump administration, there is no US group that can build the radio equipment to transfer signals between mobile phones and the towers or sites that make up the network. Some officials believe the best way to counteract Huawei’s dominance is to make sure its rivals can match the Chinese company’s multibillion-dollar credit lines from China’s state banks that allow it to offer much longer payment terms than most of its rivals.Others in Washington are pushing instead to foster a homegrown rival to Huawei, and have asked large American telecoms equipment companies such as Oracle and Cisco whether they would consider entering the radio transmission market. Both companies have rebuffed such suggestions, according to two people familiar with the discussions, warning it would be too expensive and time-consuming to do so. The Trump administration is also looking closely at incentives to encourage US companies to invest in new 5G technology, including software which enables pieces of equipment from different companies to communicate with each other. This would allow telecoms providers to buy equipment off the shelf from multiple vendors, rather than relying on one company to build an entire network, the kind of work in which Huawei specialises. For example, officials have been in talks with Altiostar, a Massachusetts-based company that makes such software, to work out how to support it. Possibilities include funding rural internet providers with hundreds of millions of dollars to rip out Huawei equipment and replace it with American or western technology — a plan which is currently making its way through Congress. Altiostar is also urging the administration to force hardware companies to make their products accessible to its software, while some of its backers want additional tax breaks to encourage US participation on international telecoms standards bodies.Thierry Maupilé, executive vice-president at Altiostar, said in an interview: “We do not need to create another Huawei, there is an alternative. Our product is very attractive to the administration, but we need them to help support the US supply chain.”

IS NOKIA PRICED “FOR PERFORMANCE ONLY” or “FOR EXPECTED PERFORMANCE? (10-08-2019)

As we near the end of the third quarter of 2019 many analysts view Nokia as a large international company with significant debt, low margins, and spotty management performance. In addition, Nokia is viewed as a company whose operating income and profit margins are held hostage by the macro-economics of the world and on a micro-economic level under pressure from low cost Chinese competitors. Hence, most analysts and mutual funds have low expectations for Nokia shares. Most long-term investors will stipulate to all the factors mentioned here, but what about the road ahead--tomorrow and beyond?

    SOME PROOF

Despite the conditions mentioned in the previous paragraph Nokia reported a surprisingly strong second quarter. The conundrum: shareholders were punished for that performance with the stock declining since the second quarter report and now trading near its low of the year. While one must accept the pressures on the industry and the ragged turn-around performance of the company, 2019 is a turning point for the company and its second quarter report is an omen for the astute investor that things are about to radically and permanently change for Nokia for the better.

In the investing world one often finds stocks that are priced "for performance only” and others that are priced “for expected Performance". When management has a proven track record of success its shares are priced for expected performance--- as investors anticipate the company's performance 6 to 12 months in the future.

    MORE PROOF NEEDED

When management does not have a proven track record of success its shares are priced “for performance only”. Such is the case with Nokia. It doesn’t matter that management promises margins will increase to 12-16% or that earnings will increase by 50% next year or that their new product line has a massive market ahead and will grow at over a 70% CAGR for the next five years or more. So far, Nokia has proven none of it, only after it is proven will the shares respond. However, there is one thing that is more than just a promise and management has delivered on it,--- its shares have a 4% dividend. A nice perk while waiting for Rajeev Suri and his team to prove themselves.

Long-term investors can only hope Nokia’s third quarter report, even if somewhat weaker than quarter two, will provide proof that improvement is happening, and that management is delivering on its goals.

Mijn excuses, ik las over de nobel prijs en moest denken aan de nieuwe batterij van Nokia.
