“Self-driving maps are things that lots of companies are investing in—we’re investing in them as well,” he said. “It requires a completely new and detailed level of precision that has never been seen before.”
    www.adweek.com/digital/automakers-are...

To Gupta’s point, he said that some autonomous cars need centimeter-level mapping, meaning that GPS data that typically covers 10 meters is not safe.

While autonomous cars are likely years away from becoming mainstream, Gupta added that 10 percent of Uber’s millennial users in the U.S. have either given up their car or don’t plan to buy a car, suggesting that automakers won’t necessarily need to create millions of driverless vehicles before they catch on with consumers.

He found that the Autopilot only used two out of eight cameras, but Electrek can actually confirm that Tesla currently only uses one out of the eight cameras of the new hardware suite: the main front-facing camera. The tape covering the other front-facing cameras could have affected the main one which could have led his test results, but there’s really only one camera in use when Autosteer is active.

    2. Mapping
Right now, GPS systems can pinpoint locations of phones and cars to within about 2 meters roughly 95 percent of the time. That’s accurate enough to navigate in traffic, but not good enough to let the car drive on its own.
That’s why researchers and carmakers are embarking on a massive endeavor to create high-definition 3D maps of the nation’s roads. Some of this mapping is already under way in cities where self-driving fleets and research vehicles have scanned roads using lidar.
These high-definition maps have been shown to be accurate to within a few centimeters. They can help self-driving cars navigate when conditions make it difficult for sensors to see the road. And they can assist self-driving cars in cutting through the chaos while merging onto a highway entrance ramp, joining a traffic circle, or traversing a bridge.
Ford’s test vehicles, for example, scan every road they drive to pinpoint locations of trees, fire hydrants, buildings, stop signs, and traffic lights—anything within 200 meters of the moving car. Once roads—and larger areas such as towns and cities—are fully mapped, cars will know whether a crosswalk exists even when painted lines are worn thin or covered by snow.
Some companies have begun crowdsourcing the job of gathering data for 3D maps instead of doing it all themselves. Newer-model cars already have built-in cameras for active-safety systems such as automatic braking and lane-change assist that are generating huge amounts of this kind of data.
Even temporary construction zones, potholes, and sinkholes could be identified and marked very quickly with crowdsourcing of real-time conditions, says Jim Zizelman, a vice president for electronics and safety at Delphi, an automotive and technology company.
This is one reason companies like Tesla are willing to roll out cars equipped with autonomous-vehicle hardware before having corresponding software written. By using the cars’ cameras to record data about accidents and near misses, Tesla says it can evolve and validate self-driving technology before activating it.
Other companies like Mobileye are planning a similar effort to gather data from the nearly 14 million newer-model cars already using their sensors for other semi-autonomous features.
One of the challenges of 3D maps using lidar is that they’ll need storage and processing powers well beyond what could fit in a car today. The crowd-sourced maps would transmit data 100,000 times faster than the 3D maps using lidar, says Zizelman, and they’ll be continually updated.

APPLE: AUGMENTED REALITY COULD BE THE NEXT DRIVER, UBS SAYS.
    Cercle Finance - 17:09
(CercleFinance.com) - On Tuesday UBS raised its target price for the Apple stock from 138 dollars to 151 dollars, saying augmented reality could be the 'next big thing' for the tech giant.

'Investors could be surprised at how augmented reality (AR) could reinvigorate the iPhone/iPad and possibly result in new products', UBS writes in a report today.

The broker - which has a 'buy' rating on the shares - explains that advanced cameras will soon enable users to hold their phones up with images superimposed onto the screen in cars, rooms, or walking down the street.

In this context, 3D mapping will be key, UBS adds, saying that Apple's expertise could make the company a real winner.

Autonomous Cars Will Have Enhanced Safety: Thanks to Mapping by QUALCOMM and TomTom NV

The world quickly embracing the use of autonomous vehicles and this has put big automakers to a task. However, these vehicles must be safe and efficient, which raises the need for accurate mapping data. This need has motivated a partnership between QUALCOMM, Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated and TomTom NV(AMS:TOM2).

The duo will endeavor to crowdsource high-definition map data. This will be made possible by zipping together Qualcomm’s Drive Data Platform (DDP) QUALCOMM, Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) and the HD Map tool from TomTom. That means apart from just the usual approval, the authorities will also ask for the mapping data before any self-driving car can be put on the road.

But the partnership will somewhat bypass the traditional way of categorizing map data

TomTom’s HD Map will enable autonomous vehicles to locate themselves on the road as they pull through various maneuvers. The same Map will also use the Qualcomm map snippets for maintenance. On the other hand, DDP will be collecting and analyzing data from vehicle sensors so as to pick the driving patterns.

However, the partnership will not provide the standard way of categorizing map data because it will adhere to the use of massive vehicle fleets. In place of this, the duo says it will use machine learning alongside crowdsourcing to put together its knowledge base. After all, they both have the expertise.

Head of Autonomous Driving at TomTom Willem Strijbosch said, “We’re excited to explore the connectivity and compute capabilities of the Qualcomm Drive Data Platform to help map the world for the future of driving.”

It is possible to have an affordable and easy-to-integrate mapping solution

The vice president of automotive, Qualcomm Technologies Nakul Duggal says that there is no reason as to why autonomous vehicles should not have the Drive Data Platform. In any case, it is very easy to integrate it. Strijbosch adds that they will be seeking to maintain HD maps using a range of input sources. It is all about exploration of innovation.

If Nvidia takes 50% market share in autonomous GPUs, Nvidia's revenues should increase $6 billion by 2020, at a current price of $1200/GPU (0.5 x 10,000,000 x $1200).

That's a 17% CAGR from the automotive sector alone.

Don't forget, we assumed that Nvidia will take only 50% market share in the autonomous GPU industry, which we believe is a conservative assumption, taking the Drive PX 2 capabilities into account.

Just for the record, in its 2017 FY (yes, Nvidia is ahead of the market by a one full fiscal year), Nvidia achieved a growth rate of 37%.

Still think that a 26% CAGR is not possible?

Well, look at Nvidia's data center revenue increase of 145% Y/Y

50% marktaandeel?? Qualcomm/NXP hebben nu een marktaandeel van 80% in de automotive chipssector.

@Dutchy Ron, deel je de opvatting dat de GPU van Nvidia zo veel beter is als hier beweerd wordt?

Sundara Nagalingam of NVIDIA talks about self-driving vehicles and geospatial data

Many self-proclaimed Tesla killers have come and gone, and most have not been able to topple the EV giant. Lucid Motors' Lucid Air, is touted to be a game changer.
The futuristic sedan captures the eye with its aluminium lozenge shaped body, Micro-Lens headlights and stealthy finish.

The car is expected to make its debut i n 2019 at prices north of $ 100,000. But it already has the attention of car aficionados.

    www.fool.com/investing/2016/11/07/qua...
Mobileye has posted double-digit sales growth in every quarter since its IPO in 2014. However, there are rising concerns that Mobileye will struggle to fend off bigger rivals such as NVIDIA and Qualcomm/NXP. Tesla Motors recently discontinued its partnership with Mobileye over concerns about its EyeQ-powered Autopilot system, leaving the door wide open for competitors to swoop in. Its aforementioned partnership with Intel should provide Mobileye with some financial support, but it's unclear if it can remain relevant against NVIDIA and NXP's newer computer vision plays.

Should you fear the 800-pound gorilla?
Qualcomm has now become the 800-pound gorilla of automotive chips, but investors shouldn't assume that the chipmaker can simply boot NVIDIA, Intel, and Mobileye out of the market. NVIDIA and Mobileye both have deep roots in the industry, and Intel can make additional acquisitions to strengthen its foothold. Nonetheless, investors should keep a close eye on Qualcomm's alarming advance into the growing market for connected cars.
