    Shipbreaking Markets in Limbo

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    20 Dec, 2022, 5:15 am

World’s leading buyer of old ships for recycling GMS said “Another lackluster week has descended across sub-continent markets, with India once again suffering steel reversals, a Bangladeshi market paralyzed by LC restrictions, and a Pakistani market that is still confused whether to dip in to the buying of whatever unit comes available. On the far end, Turkey continues its dead drift through the recycling stream as rumors surface about discussions with Aliaga Buyers regarding 2023 deliveries, in addition a degree of stability in its fundamentals noticed over the last couple of weeks.”

GMS said “Overall, tonnage flow has started to increase as well, particularly in the container sector, which has come off significantly since the impressive peaks seen over the last two years. Tankers too, continue to trade profitably whilst dry bulk markets and Capes in particular endure volatile weeks of fluctuations.”

GMS added “Meanwhile, China’s relaxation of COVID restrictions is expected to bring some positivity back into the markets post New Year, as the world slowly gets back to normal after almost three years of varying degrees of COVID restrictions.”

GMS concluded “On the global front, stock markets have plunged this week off the back of announcements of further rate hikes, in order to try and ease some of the soaring global inflation, as recession fears in the EU, UK and the US loom ever larger. As such, for recycling markets, it is a slightly bleak and glum end to the year, with prices, economies, fundamentals, and sentiments showing no signs of stabilizing just yet, and thus, Sellers and Cash Buyers remain in a state of limbo when considering the sale of older assets.”

Dry Bulk – USD 500-520 per LDT

Tankers – USD 510-530 per LDT

EIB Grants Loan to Danieli to Fund Green Steel in Italy & Croatia

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    20 Dec, 2022, 5:20 am

The European Investment Bank is granting EUR 350 million loan to Danieli, a global leader in steel plant production based in Italy. The EU bank loan will help to promote the circular economy through the production of recycled steel at the plants of Acciaierie Bertoli Safau in Cargnacco in Udine in Italy and of Acciaierie Bertoli Safau Sisak in Croatia. 65% or EUR 227.5 million of the EIB funds will be allocated to Danieli Group’s Italian plants, while the remaining 35% or EUR 122.5 million will go to its Croatian supply chain.

The EIB financing will help Danieli Group achieve climate neutrality by 2050, contributing to the development of innovative technologies for producing steel using electric arc furnaces and minimills. The project also aims to foster the transition to a circular economy by reusing by-products and increasing the recovery of other metals from scrap. In concrete terms, the EIB resources will go towards the design and creation of green plants with three major positive effects:

    1. Reducing specific energy use via plant efficiency, making it possible to cut CO2 emissions per tonne of steel produced.

    2. Driving the circular economy via the recycling of scrap to produce steel, promoting the responsible management of this type of material and limiting greenhouse gas emissions. The local reuse of scrap prevents it from being exported from Europe to other countries across the world, only for new material to be extracted.

    3. Creating new, stable jobs, as well as improving STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills.

This is the fifth operation signed by the EIB and Danieli in the last 25 years, totalling EUR 580 million.

Nissan to Use Kobe Steel's Low-CO2 Steel for New Models

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    20 Dec, 2022, 5:21 am

Japanese Nissan Motor and Kobe Steel have announced that Nissan plans to use Kobenable Steel for Nissan models from January 2023 onward. Kobenable steel, commercialized by Kobe Steel, significantly reduces CO2 emissions in the blast furnace process. Kobe Steel will also supply Nissan with aluminum sheets made from green-aluminum raw materials. This will be the first time Kobenable Steel will be used in mass-produced vehicles. Nissan models will use Kobenable Premier, which reduces 100% of CO2 emissions during manufacturing through the mass-balance method*3. The specific amount of steel to be used by Nissan will be determined through further discussions.

Nissan aims to achieve carbon neutrality throughout the entire product life cycle by 2050. Since approximately 60% of a vehicle's weight is made up of steel parts and around 10% of its weight is made up of aluminum parts, the use of green steel and green aluminum is a very effective way to reduce CO2 emissions during parts manufacturing, which is part of the vehicle's life cycle.

Kobe Steel’s low CO2 Kobenable Steel was adopted by Toyota Motor in June 2022 as a material for automobile components. Toyota has employed Kobenable Premier, a steel product with 100% reduction in CO2 emissions during manufacturing, for the suspension members of its hydrogen engine-equipped racing vehicle Corolla. Since May 2021, Toyota has been participating in the Super Taikyu Series with the hydrogen engine-equipped Corolla. Racing vehicles are required to have a body made with high-quality materials as they need to withstand the harsh environment of motorsports.

Kobenable Steel is based on the KOBELCO Group’s CO2 Reduction Solution for Blast Furnace Iron making announced in February 2021. It utilizes a technology that can significantly reduce CO2 emissions from the blast furnace, which was demonstrated at the company’s Kakogawa Works by charging the blast furnace with a large amount of hot briquetted iron produced by the MIDREX Process.

Kobenable Steel is available for all types of steel products (steel sheet, steel plate, wire rod & bar products) manufactured at the Company’s Kakogawa Works and the Kobe Wire Rod & Bar Plant. In addition, since it maintains the same level of high quality as conventional products, Kobe Steel can continue to provide customers with blast furnace steel products that require high quality, such as special steel wire rods and ultra-high-tensile strength steel, which are the Company’s strengths.

Primetals, Fortescue & Voestalpine to Evaluate Green Iron Plant

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    20 Dec, 2022, 5:22 am

Primetals Technologies, together with its strategic partners Mitsubishi Corporation, global leader in the mining Australian Fortescue and globally leading steel and technology group Austrian voestalpine, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The partnership is aimed at designing and engineering an industrial-scale prototype plant with a new process for net-zero-emission iron making at the voestalpine site in Linz in Austria. The collaboration will also investigate the implementation and operation of the plant.

The new iron making process will be based on Primetals Technologies’ HYFOR and Smelter solutions. HYFOR is the world’s first direct reduction process for iron ore fines that will not require any agglomeration steps, like sintering or pelletizing. A pilot plant has been in operation since the end of 2021, and Primetals Technologies has run numerous successful test campaigns over the last year including successful trials on Fortescue’s Pilbara iron ore products. The new Smelter technology from Primetals Technologies is a furnace powered by electrical energy. It is used for melting and final reduction of direct reduced iron based on lower-grade iron ores. In that way, it produces alternative green hot metal for the steelmaking plant.

The project planning phase will be used to design an industrial-scale prototype plant with a capacity of between three to five tons of green hot metal per hour. It is the first solution to link a hydrogen-based direct reduction plant for iron ore fines with a Smelter.

The main goal of the project planning phase is to develop the basis for decision to realize a prototype plant capable of continuous operation, and then to gain the know-how needed for the next step, a commercial full-scale plant. Another target is to investigate the use of various types of iron ores to produce DRI, hot briquetted iron and hot metal and, as a next step, draw conclusions about the individual process steps as well as different combinations of them.

The hydrogen used in the new plant will mainly come from Verbund, voestalpine’s and Austria’s leading renewable energy producer, who operates a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer named H2Future. Located in Linz, this plant has a capacity of over six megawatts, and is still the world’s largest of its kind used at a steel plant. The H2Future plant will be upgraded to allow for the compression and storage of hydrogen gas before use in the combined HYFOR and Smelter plant.

Results of Negotiations for ETS & CBAM Insufficient - WV Stahl

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    20 Dec, 2022, 5:23 am

German steel association WV Stahl said that despite some important improvements compared to the Commission's proposal on EU’s ETS scheme & climate plan, the overall result is not sufficient. WV Stahl President Mr Hans Jürgen Kerkhoff said “In particular, the lack of a solution for exports leads to planning uncertainty for industry in transition. However, such a solution is needed to avoid competitive disadvantages on third markets. In addition, the completely inadequate addressing of the question of how carbon leakage can be prevented on export markets also significantly endangers the effectiveness of the climate protection agreements, since the promotion here is essentially based on effective border compensation. This gap must be closed and internationally competitive framework conditions created.

European steel association EUROFER Director General Mr Axel Eggert has said “The uncertainty means whether the CO2 Border adjustment mechanism works, great uncertainty for the industry. Therefore, companies are dependent on direct support from politicians.”

At the weekend, the Council, the EU Parliament and the EU Commission agreed on the revision of emissions trading and the missing elements of the border adjustment mechanism.

Nippon Steel Engineering in cooperation with Nippon Steel had received an order to manufacture a NS Panel BridgeTM for the Gerezani Bridge as part of the Japanese government's Official Development Assistance project The Project for Improvement of Transport Capacity in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Nippon Steel Engineering announced that the onsite construction has been completed by Sumitomo Mitsui. This is the first time that NS Panel Bridge has been adopted for an international project.

Construction overview: Construction of bridge superstructure (bridge length 40 m, width 30.4 m/2 lanes on each side, sidewalks on both sides, central bus lane), abutment, foundation, and access road. Use NS Panel Bridge (weight: approx. 450 tonnes) for the superstructure.

Client: The Tanzania National Roads Agency

    Design: INGÉROSEC Corporation

    General contractor: Sumitomo Mitsui Construction

Primary subcontractor: Yokogawa Bridge (Nippon Steel Engineering Co manufactured, supplied and provideds technical support for NS Panel Bridge

    Project budget: JPY 1.1 billion

The Gerezani Bridge was constructed as part of the Gerezani Road development project to relieve the chronic traffic congestion on the main road in Dar es Salaam City, the economic and distribution hub of Tanzania. Since this bridge crosses the railway, the Tanzanian government evaluated the completed bridge for its Hot-rolled atmospheric corrosion resisting steels for welded structure (JIS G 3114) manufactured by Nippon Steel Corporation, which does not require re-painting maintenance, in addition to speedy construction and low girder height, which are characteristic of NS Panel Bridge.

NS Panel Bridge is a new type of unit-type composite deck slab bridge that consists of a main girder panel, which integrates the composite slab and main girder, and a middle slab panel. The steel shells of the main girder and composite slab are integrated at the plant beforehand to make the onsite construction process simpler and quicker. In addition, since NS Panel Bridge does not require onsite under-girder work, such as the installation and removal of suspended scaffolding and floor slab formwork, it can be erected with minimal traffic restrictions, especially for bridges that cross roads or railways, thereby reducing traffic congestion and other burdens on the surrounding area.

Baowu Qingneng Chaoyang Gas was awarded the Carbon Management System Standard Implementation Demonstration Unit in first EATNS carbon management system development seminar held at the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange to become the first batch of enterprises to obtain the EATNS carbon management system assessment certificate.

In recent years, Chaoyang Gas has continuously optimized the process technology according to the characteristics of the enterprise, carried out equipment innovation and transformation, increased the oxygen production capacity of the oxygen generator and realized instantaneous supply of the steel main line gas supply pipeline to achieve production maintenance and energy saving.

EATNS carbon management system was launched under China’s double carbon target strategy and the launch of the national carbon market. The system standard is the first systematic carbon management in China that includes carbon emissions, carbon trading, carbon assets, and carbon neutrality. The system is a new method to help achieve the double carbon goal. The introduction and application of the carbon management system is conducive to the stable development of the national carbon market and the realization of the local government's carbon peak carbon neutrality goal. At the same time, it helps enterprises to carry out carbon emission management related work in the product life cycle.

Nippon Steel Engineering announced that its proposal GHG Emission Reduction Project by Installation of Tundish Plasma Heater at Electric Arc Furnace in Indonesia has been selected for the second round of the "Feasibility Study project for the JCM (Decarbonization Field) as part of the FY 2022 Study on the infrastructure development project for acquisition of JCM credits" conducted by the Global Environment Affairs Office, Industrial Science and Technology Policy and Environment Bureau, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

This Project aims to contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society by introducing our Tundish Plasma Heater to the Republic of Indonesia for the purpose of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the iron and steel industry in Indonesia and the ASEAN region. We will conduct a feasibility study for the realization of the JCM Project.

The Tundish Plasma Heating System developed and commercialized by NSE is capable of maintaining the temperature of molten steel in the tundish?3 of a continuous caster at a steel mill at a constant temperature. By introducing the NS-TPH to an existing continuous casting machine, the temperature can be lowered in the process prior to the continuous casting machine, leading to a reduction in the energy consumption rate of the entire steelmaking plant, which is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 6% per tonne of production.

In addition to the NS-TPH, NSE also provides steelmaking equipment which contributes greatly to energy conservation and reduction of environmental impact such as Coke Dry Quenching System, Top-Combustion Hot Stoves.
