    8 Dec, 2022, 5:38 am

Czech steelmaker Trinecké železárny has put it into trial a modern fully automatic line, the construction of which the mill started last year. The investment exceeded CZK 700 million. Steel bars with a diameter of 30 to 80 millimeters come out of the new peeling line of Trinecké železárny with an accuracy of hundredths of a millimeter and without surface defects.

The steel bars undergo automated material quality control using an online X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. The entire output section, in which the steel bars are bundled, preserved and packaged, is also automated. It includes the environmentally friendly processing of waste steel chips, which are crushed on site and then briquetted for further use.

The new peeling line has a capacity of 90 kilotons per year. Its commissioning has increased total capacity of peeled bars in Trinec to 150,000 tonnes per year

This is the second technology at Trinecké železárny that increases the added value of the production of round steel bars. The first one started operation in 2014. Bar and profile steel is the second best-selling product of the largest Czech metallurgical company. Of the total production volume of 2,400,000 tonnes last year, bar and section steel accounted for nearly 540,000 tonnes.

    Beursblik: ArcelorMittal meest aantrekkelijk

    Morgan Stanley verwacht tactisch herstel.

    USSK idles second blast furnace
    421 Views

US Steel Kosice (USSK) has shut down a second blast furnace until early 2023 due to high energy costs and low demand, a company spokesman confirms to Kallanish. Two of the firm’s three BFs are now idle.

The firm idled blast furnace no.2 on 4 September. This was initially supposed to be for a 60-day planned maintenance, but the unit remains off line.

USSK reduced shipments 19% on-year in the third quarter to 867,000 net tons. Raw steel production dropped 26% to 946,000nt, giving capacity utilisation of 75% versus 101% a year earlier. Besides demand headwinds, results were also negatively impacted by escalating energy costs, which parent company US Steel said it expects will also remain high.

Nine-month-through-September shipments fell 7% on-year to 3.04 million nt, with raw steel production down 13% to 3.25mnt, giving capacity utilisation of 87%. Net sales rose 13% to $3.5 billion but Ebitda fell 26% to $577m.

Amid recent reports Metinvest was mulling acquiring USSK, the Ukrainian steelmaker said its interest in the Slovak steelworks may resume in future but the invasion of Ukraine by Russia is currently dampening any acquisition potential.

IEEFA Highlights MENA as Potential Hub for Green Steel & Metallics

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    9 Dec, 2022, 5:47 am

Institute for Energy Economics & Financial Analysis in a recent report has highlighted that the Middle East & North Africa region has the high-grade iron ore supply, existing DRI capacity, green hydrogen potential and renewable energy resources necessary for producing green steel, putting it at an advantage worldwide. Recently, a number of major global steelmakers and iron ore producers have announced projects in the Middle East and North Africa region that are focused on producing high-grade iron ore, DR-grade pellets, low-carbon DRI and green hydrogen.

Emirates Steel Arkan, the UAE’s largest steel and building material producer, announced in October 2022 that it is working on producing DRI in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with two Japanese companies ITOCHU as a supplier of high-grade iron ore and JFE Steel as one of the end users of the DRI. The UAE project, which is in the feasibility study stage, is expected to commence in the second half of 2025 and supply ferrous raw materials to steel producers in Asia. The project’s technology would initially be a gas-based direct reduction with the option of using green hydrogen in the future to reduce the project’s carbon footprint. The studies are focused on establishing a steel raw material hub in Abu Dhabi to meet the increasing demand for fossil-free steel.

In November 2022, Brazilian miner Vale, the third-largest iron ore miner and largest producer of iron ore pellets in the world, signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia’s National Industrial Development Center to construct an iron ore pelletising plant in Ras Al-Khair Industrial City. The plant would have an annual capacity of 4 million tonnes and USD 1.1 billion CAPEX. It would also be Vale’s second investment in the MENA region after its pelletising plants commenced in Oman in 2011. In another November announcement, Vale revealed its intention to establish green briquette megahubs in the Middle East. Vale will provide iron ore fines to three concentration plants in Saudi Arabia, UAE and Oman. This will be agglomerated into green briquettes of a grade high enough to be used in DRI furnaces.

In North Africa, ArcelorMittal signed a MoU in May 2022 with the second-largest iron ore miners in Africa SNIM to assess the possibility of developing a pelletisation and DRI plant in Mauritania. The project would take advantage of the country’s potential for renewable energy and green hydrogen production. Energy giant bp signed an MoU with Mauritania during COP27 to evaluate green hydrogen production potential in that country.

Jindal Shadeed Group announced in December that they would invest more than US$3 billion in green steel in Oman by 2026. The company operates a steelmaking plant with a capacity of 2.4 million tonnes annually using gas-based DRI technology and aims to build a new plant that can use green hydrogen with an annual capacity of 5 million tonnes to make green steel. MENA’s manufacturers will consume up to 40% of production, and the rest will be exported to meet green steel demand worldwide, focusing on special automotive products for producers in Europe and Japan.

These announcements and investments from major global players in steel, iron ore and energy underline the MENA region’s potential to play a key role in the steel transition by becoming a green metallics (green HBI/DRI) and green hydrogen producer and exporter. MENA has significant advantages over other regions of the world when it comes to steel decarbonisation. It already has the key ingredients for producing green steel – an expanding supply of DR-grade iron ore, a fleet of operational DRI plants that could be converted to use green hydrogen, cheap renewables through excellent solar radiation resources that could be harnessed to make that green hydrogen, and enough space and lands for allocating to such large-scale green projects. It is also a prime geographic location for exporting raw materials and finished products.

BlueScope & Former GM Mr Ellis Tried to Induce Steel Price Fixing

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :
    9 Dec, 2022, 5:47 am

In civil cartel proceedings brought by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission, the Federal Court has found that BlueScope Steel and its former general manager of sales and marketing Mr Jason Ellis engaged in cartel conduct in relation to the supply of flat steel products in Australia. The Court found that between September 2013 and June 2014, BlueScope and Mr Ellis attempted to induce eight steel distributors in Australia, and overseas manufacturer, Yieh Phui, to enter agreements to fix and raise the level of pricing for flat steel products supplied in Australia.

ACCC Commissioner Ms Liza Carver said “The Court has found that BlueScope, which is one of Australia’s largest companies, and its former senior executive, Jason Ellis, attempted to induce competitors to enter into price fixing arrangements. If successful, these attempts would have resulted in agreements between competitors which reduced price competition in the Australian flat steel market and increased prices for flat steel products which are widely used in Australia.”

Ms Carver added “Cartels not only disadvantage other businesses which are competing lawfully, but can also lead to consumers paying higher prices. This is an important decision which has the potential to strengthen the ACCC’s position in future cases of attempted cartel conduct. This should serve as a strong warning to all businesses and individuals that even attempting to reach a price fixing arrangement with one or more competitors may have very serious consequences, on both a corporate and personal level. Corporations and individuals involved in cartel conduct may face either ACCC civil enforcement action or potential criminal charges brought by the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions.”

A hearing on penalties and other orders has been set down for 3 April 2023. In addition to seeking penalties against both BlueScope and Mr Ellis, the ACCC is also seeking an order disqualifying Mr Ellis from managing corporations for a period to be determined by the Court.

This decision comes after Mr Ellis was convicted and sentenced in December 2020 for inciting the obstruction of an ACCC investigation, as a result of his conduct encouraging two other BlueScope employees to give false information and evidence to the ACCC during its investigation of the cartel conduct.

A cartel exists when businesses agree to act together instead of competing with each other. Conduct can include price fixing, sharing markets, rigging bids and controlling the output or limiting the amount of goods and services.

Ukraine’s leading steelmaker Metinvest's humanitarian initiative "Saving Lives" has introduced a large-scale program for prosthetics and rehabilitation of military and civilians in Ukraine. Metinvest said “Since the beginning of full-scale Russian aggression, the need for prosthetics for Ukrainian military and civilians due to hostilities has increased significantly. As the war in Ukraine progresses, the number of people who have lost limbs will continue to increase. Often, those who need prostheses do not know where to start and where to turn for help. In addition, not everyone can independently pay for prosthetics, the cost of which starts from several tens of thousands of euros. That is why "Saving Lives" decided to help the victims return to a full life.”

The first area of the initiative's work will be prosthetics and rehabilitation of Metinvest employees defending the country in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. About 7 thousand employees of the company joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. "Saving Lives" together with the Project to support prosthetics in Ukraine and their partners ProsthetiKa and Razom for Ukraine will take care of organizational and documentary issues related to the prosthetics of victims. The program includes preparation for prosthetics, installation of prostheses and further observation in Ukrainian clinics, as well as physical and psychological rehabilitation. At the first stage, the program will cover 16 employees of the company and their family members who are in Ukraine and abroad.

In the near future, the program is planned to be expanded to attract war veterans and civilians in the regions where Metinvest operates.
