DOD Building 3D-Printed Barracks in America

US’s Defense Department, in partnership with the private sector, is building three transient training barracks using advanced 3D printing technology. The project, which is being spearheaded by the Defense Innovation Unit, is expected to be completed within 10 months. At more than 5,700 square feet each, these barracks will each be the largest 3D-printed structures in the Americas. The barracks will be the first 3D-printed structures that comply with the DOD's newly released Unified Facilities Criteria for additive concrete construction, which provides guidance for DOD construction.

Previously, the Unified Facilities Criteria did not include specifications for 3D-printed concrete wall systems, preventing any companies that used this novel approach to construction from bidding on DOD construction projects and preventing DOD from leveraging the efficiencies gained from this technique. This change to UFC by DOD's Structural Discipline Working Group further enhances the technology transition led by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center and DIU to leverage commercial innovation and incorporate novel, timesaving manufacturing methods within the DOD.

ICON, a construction technology company based in Austin, Texas, was selected to do the work. The company had previously done 3D construction work with DIU for the Marine Corps. Also, in 2021, the Texas Military Department partnered with ICON to design and 3D print an innovative training barracks at the Camp Swift Training Center in Bastrop, Texas.

The material used in the barracks construction is ICON's proprietary Lavacrete, which is a type of high-strength concrete with a compressive strength of 2,000 to 3,500 pounds per square inch. This material can withstand extreme weather and greatly reduce the impact of natural disasters, while providing maximum efficiency. It can be printed at high speeds while retaining form, enabling structures to be built faster while keeping construction projects on schedule and on budget, according to ICON. Also, the building material will last longer than traditional construction materials and methods, according to ICON.

    27 Apr, 2022, 6:30 am

GE Renewable Energy has held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate a new research and development facility that will conduct research on how to 3D print the concrete base of towers used in wind turbines. The research will enable GE to 3D print the bottom portion of the wind turbine towers on-site at wind farms, lowering transportation costs and creating additional employment opportunities at the wind farms where the technology will be used.

The research being conducted in the Bergen facility is supported in part by a grant from the US Department of Energy. A team of 20 people will continue to work on optimizing the 3D printing technology with first applications in the field anticipated within the next five years.

GE Renewable Energy Chief Technology Officer Danielle Merfeld, who spoke at the event, said, “Innovation will continue to be a key driver in accelerating the energy transition. It is particularly important to continuously improve the ways we design, manufacture, transport, and construct the large components of modern wind farms. We appreciate the support of the US Department of Energy for the research we are doing here and are confident it will help make the wind farms of tomorrow even more efficient, economical, and environmentally responsible.”

The research being done at the Bergen, NY facility will enable GE to better serve the growing US wind power market. The American Clean Power Association reports that there are more than 68,000 wind turbines across the country are generating clean, reliable power. Wind power capacity totals 135 GW, making it the fourth-largest source of electricity in the country. GE Renewable Energy was recognized by ACPA as the top manufacturer of wind turbines in the US in 2021 for the fourth year in a row.

Alquist 3D Prints Homes in Virginia

    Strategic Research Institute
    Published on :

3D-printed-home builder Alquist 3D announces Project Virginia–the world’s largest 3D-printed construction project in the world: 200 homes around Virginia. Alquist will kick off this project with a demonstration near the site of the first two 3D-printed homes in Pulaski in Virginia. Project Virginia follows the success of Alquist’s recent Habitat for Humanity project in Williamsburg in Virginia, the first owner-occupied, 3D-printed home in the world. The three-bedroom, two-bath home Alquist built for Habitat for Humanity took only about 22 hours to print the exterior shell. That’s at least 2-3 weeks less than the standard construction schedule, cutting nearly 15% off of costs. 3D printing also enables builders to use less lumber, a huge benefit since lumber availability and prices have been highly volatile.

Alquist’s mission is to solve the housing crisis in rural and underserved areas of America. The company uses the most advanced 3D-printing technology, Black Buffalo 3D's NEXCON printer, to lower the cost of housing and infrastructure in economically distressed and under-served communities. Alquist chose Pulaski because demand for housing is soaring there thanks to the more than 3,000 new jobs Volvo, Blue Star Manufacturing, and American Glove Innovations will create in the area. Also, Virginia’s New River Valley was recently identified as having one of the highest growth rates in the nation for tech jobs in the US. Those companies’ workers will need affordable homes near their jobs and Alquist is equipped to provide unique, affordable housing that these workers and their families will love.

Printing a house is just like printing on paper, only supersized. The ink is reinforced concrete, which is layered one row at a time as a home’s exterior walls are printed. 3D-printed walls can be built in days instead of weeks

    1) Today HPQ filed on SEDAR the Management information circular for the upcoming AGM when shareholders will be able to allow us to complete the final step required to become a Tier 1 Technology issuer. This is a big milestone for us...

Point 2) No news does not mean that management is hiding bad news, it just means that we have nothing to report. If we had bad news that would be material and we would have to report it immediately. Now as it pertains to the end of the commissioning of the QRR, I have noticed that FUD posters and some shareholders are getting restless because we have gone further than the 3-4 weeks Peter mentioned. The fact is that I talk about a timeline of weeks, and for me, that means anytime up to two months after the April 5 press release. The commissioning is a binary event, until it is finished, it is not and since nothing negative is happening, I don't see a reason for us to issue an update press release to come with another tentative timeline.

    Regards

OWNERSHIP OF THE PUREVAPTM QUARTZ REDUCTION REACTOR PILOT SYSTEM TRANFERED TO HPQ SILICON
    • Insurance to cover its $6.2 Million replacement cost secured
MONTREAL, Canada, May 19, 2022 — HPQ Silicon Resources Inc. (“HPQ” or the “Company”) (TSX-V: HPQ) (OTCQX: HPQFF) (FWB: UGE), an innovative silicon solutions and technology development company, would like to inform shareholders that with the forthcoming start of the final phase of the PUREVAPTM Quartz Reduction Reactor (RRQ) Research and Development program, and the imminent completion of the commissioning of the pilot system, time has arrived for the ownership of the pilot system to be transferred to HPQ-Silicon from PyroGenesis Canada Inc. (TSX: PYR) (NASDAQ: PYR).
The plan as always been to transfer the ownership of the pilot systems from PyroGenesis to HPQ Silicon prior to the reactor start, since under the terms of the July 2016 agreement, HPQ-Silicon, is the sole party entitled to claim R&D credits associated with the PUREVAPTM QRR pilot plant system operations.
Transferring the ownership required HPQ-Silicon to purchase insurance to cover the $6.2 million 2022 replacement cost, estimated by PyroGenesis, of HPQ PUREVAPTM QRR pilot system. Based on PyroGenesis updated quotation, one thing is very clear, prices have increased significantly since the July 2016 signing of the agreement. HPQ paid, as per the 2016 agreement, $4,240,000 for design, fabrication and commissioning the pilot system. Current replacement cost is $6.2 million for the fabrication and commissioning of a new pilot system.
HPQ CEO Bernard Tourillon commented: “It may have taken time to get here, but the decision to enter early into a long term and mutually beneficial relationship with PyroGenesis to harness the potential of new silicon materials manufacturing will soon come to fruition. 2022 and beyond are going to be years for Silicon and our unique and innovative processes of manufacturing and commercializing silicon and nanosilicon materials needed for an ESG-demanding industrial landscape is one of our greatest strengths going forward.”

    PRESS RELEASE
Airbus, Safran and Tikehau Ace Capital sign a Memorandum of
Understanding with Eramet for the joint acquisition of Aubert & Duval
